According to BBC News, Dr. Sarah Parcak and a team of researchers have discovered seventeen pyramids, along with more than 1,000 tombs and 3,000 ancient settlements in Egypt. Why have these sites gone undiscovered for so many years? Well, that’s because they’re all underground.

Using infra-red satellite imaging, Parcak and her team were able to look below the surface of the Earth and explore past civilizations that have been buried in silt by the Nile. Initial excavations have already confirmed some of the findings, including two suspected pyramids. This means that in the future, archaeologists will be able to locate their ideal excavation sites prior to digging, rather than the current method of plotting a random-ass piece of land and hoping for the best.
