Sprinkle Blog

  • Welcome to the team, Jaymie

    May 20, 2011

Summer is (or almost is) here. And with that brings Summer interns, the first of which started today! A Sprinkle Lab culinary tradition of bacon & eggs, pancakes, cream-cheese bagels, and other heart-clogging edibles was prepared for Ms. Jaymie Shearer.

After a hard day’s work behind computer screens, our breakfast had settled and a trip to the donut shop was in order. Four sprinkle donuts were consumed with untold ferocity.

  • Love for Loners: Lost Cause

Love for Loners is our weekly feature promoting awesome work that is currently streaming on Netflix. It is written by resident misanthrope Jon Smith.

Well, it appears I was once again busy last Friday and missed LFL. Did you care? These past two weeks have been pretty eventful. Not only did I get to go to the Jelly Belly Factory, I explored an abandoned train station, cut myself on not one but two ceramic bowls, and started a dubstep crew. Now, some links to good movies you don’t have to pay for.

    Die Hard
This classic is a must-see. It is also a must-see-again, so if you haven’t watched it in a while, I suggest you revisit the wonderful adventures of Officer John McClane.

    image

    Starship Troopers
What’s better than an anti-war satire filled with giant bugs and Niel Patrick Harris? Nothing.

    Twin Peaks
Did you like LOST? Well, Twin Peaks was the LOST of the nineties. It begins as a simple murder mystery, but slowly unravels into a scifi-infused WTF IS HAPPENING masterpiece.

Yesterday, after many speed bumps and delays, Brandon and Jon finished filming “The Video Video”. Jon is extremely happy because he can now grow his beard out.

  • The End is Nigh

    May 18, 2011

It doesn’t hurt to have a photographer on hand. What if we all had personal paparazzi to trail us around and document our lives?

We don’t. However Sprinkle Lab does have resident documentarian Brandon on hand. The latest subject of his lens being the organization behind all of those May 21st Judgement Day billboards you’ve seen around the country. An old man named Harold Camping is behind all the commotion. He’s backed by billboards, evangelizers, and a global radio/TV network.

  • World Domination

    May 6, 2011

I love charts, more specifically, organizational charts. They really get me going… anyway,I found this gem doing some research for Sprinkle Lab’s impending world domination.

This is (or was) Disney Animation Studio’s approach to production from an organizational level. Awesomely, and according to the chart, the studio took a holistic approach to production. This allowed increased collaboration among the numerous departments spiking productivity, and great ideas. It’s no wonder they built a magical empire.

    Nice!

  • Love for Loners: Oops!

Love for Loners is our weekly feature promoting awesome work that is currently streaming on Netflix. It is written by resident misanthrope Jon Smith.

Aww, didn’t you guys miss LFL last week? No? No one noticed? Hmm… Anyway, I got called in to help with an animation with our friends Hoodablah + Sol Linero and ended up working through the weekend. Check them out, because they are incredibly talented people. Now, let’s talk about what’s streaming right now online that isn’t complete shit.

    image

    Mary & Max
This incredible piece of animation was recommended to me by Lyka, my PIC. It’s a beautiful work of claymation from Australia about a lonely little girl who befriends a New York hermit through letters. Throughout the film, you will laugh AND cry AND wish you could just hug them both and tell them it will all be okay. Perhaps the best part of this movie is Max’s endless supply of one-liners, my favorite being, “P.P.P.S. – Did you know that turtles can breathe out of their anuses?”

    Gigantic
Paul Dano! Zooey Deschanel! Edward Asner! John Goodman! Zach Galifianakis! When you find a movie that is chock-full of great talent that wasn’t popular upon its release, there are two possible conclusions to be drawn. The first being that the movie was so horrible they buried the film and hope no one ever talks about it. The second, which is the case for Gigantic, is that the script was a little too original, meaning the big production companies couldn’t ensure its profitability and therefore didn’t risk funding it. This left those attached to the project to find funding privately, which means they could get it made but wouldn’t have much left over to market the film upon its release. Gigantic is original and off-beat and totally worth watching at least four or five times.

    The Larry Sanders Show
The Larry Sanders Show was the first show to regularly feature actors playing fictionalized versions of themselves. It follows Larry Sanders — host of a late-night talk show and utter narcissist — and his team as they stumble through the arduous process of producing an entertainment show. This show is what put HBO at the top of the food chain, with good reason. In a sea of formulaic bullshit television, The Larry Sanders Show shone as a bright light of originality. It ran for a good six seasons, all of which are incredible. If you are a fan of Arrested Development, Extras or The Office, you need to start watching this show right the fuck now.

The last few months have been crazy for the good people at Invisible Children. They’ve been busy raising millions of dollars, making appearances on Oprah, and touring cross country – oh, and they just threw a nationwide advocacy event/dance party. No big deal.

To help the event go off without a hitch Invisible Children brought in Sprinkle Lab to help coordinate the multimedia event featuring exclusive videos and musical performances by national artists who volunteered to collaborate with Invisible Children. Headlining groups included Peter Pisano of Peter Wolf Crier, Mumford and Son’s, Plain White T’s, and American Idol’s David Archuleta.

Sprinkle Lab authored DVDs, coordinated day-of media distribution for all seventeen events, and also produced a unique online twist for the event – a live video feed of select performances. This allowed participants who were not able to attend in person to connect with the thousands of others simultaneously joining in on the event across the country.

We’re glad we could help make Invisible Children’s event a success – and delicious.

  • Love for Loners: Old Fool

    April 22, 2011

Love for Loners is our weekly feature promoting awesome work that is currently streaming on Netflix. It is written by resident misanthrope Jon Smith.

If you weren’t aware, I turned 23 yesterday. Yes yes, hooray. From what I’ve heard, 22 is the best year of your life. And since my 22nd year kind of sucked, that means I probably peaked around 19-20, and have already begun my descent into mediocrity. Here are some movies to distract you from your inevitable doom.

    image

    The Fifth Element
French people are crazy! Well, not all French people. Luc Besson is though; you have to be to dream up a movie like The Fifth Element. This is one of the most absurd examples of badassery. Chock-full of strange characters, thrilling action sequences and unrealistic weaponry, Fifth Element truly is one of the most original takes on the future of mankind.

    image

    True Lies
Before bustin’ blocks with Titanic then disappearing to create his magnum opus, James Cameron directed this action-comedy that pokes fun at the “secret agent” movie genre. Usually, parodies go too far with their mockery, the outlandish scenarios eliminating all believability from the story. True Lies is a great example of a film that simultaneously mocks itself while still getting you to invest in the characters. Even though the cast find themselves in some pretty ridiculous situations, their characters are realistic and imperfect enough to believe in.

    Dog Bites Man
Comedy is a troubled beast. What does / doesn’t work depends on so many variables that many times a show will get the axe just as the writers and actors find their rhythm. This is EXACTLY what happened with Dog Bites Man. The first few episodes are alright, but after the third episode, the show gets GOOD. What’s better than four professional comedians posing as a news crew, interviewing the unaware and getting them to say horrible things on-camera? I just wish this show could’ve had a second chance.
